On Thursday, strong winds and hail caused significant damage to several counties in Central Texas, including San Marcos and Johnson City.

Five-inch hail was reported by a meteorologist and storm chaser in Johnson City, Blanco County, to the National Weather Service.

That size hail is classified by NWS as CD or DVD size hail. Staff members have been working all night to repair the storm-related damage, the City of San Marcos announced on Friday.

“Reports indicate significant damage from wind and hail, including downed trees, power lines, and traffic signal disruptions,” the city said.

A brush drop has also been scheduled by the city for Saturday, May 11, according to the update.

“For safety reasons, the Purgatory Creek Natural Area and the Lime Kiln section of the Spring Lake Natural Area will remain closed until further notice due to hazardous conditions caused by downed trees. We are also asking residents to avoid river-front parks due to downed tree limbs,” the city said.

Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra informed KXAN that he had submitted a request for local disaster declaration approval to Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas Division of Emergency Management.

Announcing a two-hour delay, the San Marcos Independent School District declared that school operations on Friday, May 10 would be affected. The district mentioned that staff had already initiated assessments on Thursday evening, and the delay would facilitate collaboration with city officials on Friday morning to ensure the safety of students and staff across all campuses and district buildings.

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch extended until midnight for most of Central Texas.

According to the KXAN First Warning Weather Team, severe storms have the potential to generate very large hail and damaging winds, with the possibility of an isolated tornado.

A spokesperson for the City of San Marcos stated to KXAN on Thursday that they were still in the process of gathering information and assessing damages.
