Kalvin Phillips Will Return To Man City Squad As injury ends West Ham nightmare

Kalvin Phillips has concluded his disappointing loan spell at West Ham, with a calf injury marking the end of his season.

Having missed last weekend’s match against Chelsea due to the injury, Phillips remains unable to recover in time for Saturday’s final home game against Luton, coinciding with David Moyes’s last game at the London Stadium.

Even if Phillips were to regain fitness, he would be ineligible to play against his parent club Manchester City in the season finale. Consequently, he is anticipated to return to the Etihad early next week to resume his rehabilitation, amidst an uncertain future.

Initially, both clubs were open to negotiating an option to buy as part of the loan agreement, but failed to reach terms.

This means Phillips departs West Ham after making just three starts across competitions since his arrival in January.

The 28-year-old midfielder joined the London Stadium mid-season in pursuit of regular playing time, with hopes of solidifying his spot in the England squad for the upcoming European Championship. However, his time at West Ham has seen him fall out of contention for Gareth Southgate’s squad, marked by a challenging four-month tenure.

Phillips endured a difficult debut against Bournemouth, followed by costly errors in subsequent matches against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest, where he was also sent off. In another setback, he conceded a penalty against Newcastle, contributing to a dramatic comeback win for the hosts.

Following the Newcastle game, Phillips was captured on camera giving the middle finger at a fan who criticized him outside St James’ Park.

The unsuccessful loan stint has proven to be a setback for Moyes, who had vigorously pursued Phillips’s signing, having made multiple attempts to bring him to east London over the past two years.
