Jayson Tatum Ridicules Notion Of Celtics Being Labeled A Super Team

Following Thursday night’s disheartening defeat to the Cavaliers in Game 2, Jayson Tatum expressed his disappointment, acknowledging that winning every game is an unrealistic expectation for the Celtics.

However, it’s his assertion that the Celtics aren’t classified as one of the NBA’s “super teams” that might raise eyebrows among fans. Despite boasting a regular season record of 64-18, including an impressive 37-4 record at TD Garden, the Celtics have stumbled to a 3-2 record at home this postseason, with two significant losses already in the second round.

While it’s understandable that not every game will end in victory, Tatum‘s remark in response to a question about whether Boston fans have grown accustomed to success seems somewhat dismissive. He adamantly stated that he doesn’t regard the Celtics as a “super team” because they haven’t received widespread recognition as such across the league.

However, such comments should serve as motivation for the Celtics. Rather than focusing on individual accolades like MVP or Coach of the Year, their primary goal should be capturing a championship and avoiding embarrassing defeats, particularly on their home court.

In reality, the Celtics possess all the elements of a “super team.” Homegrown talents like Tatum and Jaylen Brown shine brightly, complemented by pivotal players like Derrick White, despite occasional rough patches. Additionally, offseason acquisitions such as Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday have fortified Boston’s lineup, creating one of the most formidable starting fives in the NBA.

While not synonymous with the star-studded Miami Heat of the past, the Celtics undeniably qualify as a super team, regardless of official NBA recognition. Tatum and his teammates should be cognizant of this fact.

Tatum’s assertion that they’re not a super team could be interpreted as an attempt to rationalize losses like Thursday night’s. However, such justifications are unacceptable.

Ultimately, the true validation of the Celtics’ status lies in securing a championship and avoiding disappointing performances in the playoffs. Tatum’s remarks, though partly accurate, may have been ill-timed given the circumstances of their recent defeat.
