Illinois Basketball Standout Terrence Shannon Jr. Ordered To Face Trial On Rape Charge In Kansas

Following testimony from a woman who described feeling “terrified” during an alleged assault, a Kansas judge on Friday ruled that University of Illinois basketball standout Terrence Shannon Jr. must stand trial on a rape charge.

Shannon, 23, hailing from Champaign, Illinois, stands accused of committing sexual assault on September 9th in Lawrence, Kansas. The incident reportedly occurred while Shannon was in Lawrence to attend a football game between the Illini and the University of Kansas.

Facing charges of rape or an alternative count of sexual battery, Shannon faced a six-game suspension before being reinstated by a federal judge who deemed his civil rights had been violated.

According to reports from the Lawrence Journal-World, a woman informed the police that while at a bar, a man she later identified as Shannon touched her inappropriately, including grabbing her buttocks and reaching under her skirt. The crowded nature of the bar allegedly prevented her from moving.

In his testimony on Friday, Shannon denied any physical contact with the woman.

Despite his denial, Judge Sally Pokorny ordered Shannon to face trial but permitted him to remain free on a $50,000 bond.

Shannon played a pivotal role for the Illini this past season as a fifth-year student, leading the team in scoring and contributing to their journey to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, where they ultimately fell to eventual champion Connecticut.
