Green Bay Appoints Doug Gottlieb As New Men’s Basketball Coach

Green Bay has announced the hiring of sports media personality Doug Gottlieb as its next men’s basketball coach.

Gottlieb was a finalist for the Green Bay position last spring, but the job went to Sundance Wicks, who led the Phoenix to an 18-14 season before leaving to become the head coach at Wyoming.

Athletic director Josh Moon acted quickly to appoint Gottlieb as Wicks’ replacement. An introductory news conference is scheduled for Wednesday.

Although Gottlieb lacks college coaching experience, he was part of the United States team staff at the 2009 and 2017 Maccabiah Games, serving as an assistant under Bruce Pearl in 2009 and as head coach in 2017. He also interviewed for the Oklahoma State job when Mike Boynton was hired and was a consultant for the Cowboys’ program this past season.

A media personality since 2002 with ESPN, CBS, and Fox Sports, Gottlieb was a standout point guard at Oklahoma State, ranking in the top 15 all-time in career assists.

His college career began at Notre Dame, but he left after an incident involving the theft of credit cards from three classmates.

Gottlieb, a Milwaukee native, is the son of the late Bob Gottlieb, who coached at Milwaukee from 1975 to 1980.

He is expected to continue hosting his Fox Sports radio show while coaching at Green Bay.
