United States three-time Olympic gymnastics gold medalist Gabby Douglas will not participate in the upcoming U.S. Gymnastics Championships, scheduled for May 30-June 2 in Fort Worth, Texas.

According to ESPN, Douglas sustained an ankle injury this week during training.

The 28-year-old had not qualified for the all-around in her two competitive outings, the American and U.S. Classics, her first since the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. However, she had achieved scores high enough to compete on three apparatus: vault, uneven bars, and balance beam.

This may not be the end for Douglas, who has expressed her aspirations for LA 2028.

Douglas first captured the world’s attention in London in 2012, where she helped Team USA secure its first team gold medal in 20 years. Shortly after, she made history by winning the all-around crown, becoming the first African American to do so.

After a competitive break, Douglas returned in 2015, aiding Team USA in winning a World team title and finishing as the all-around runner-up to superstar Simone Biles at the global meet.

At Rio 2016, Douglas missed the all-around final despite finishing third in the qualifying standings due to a rule allowing only two athletes per nation to advance. Biles and fellow London 2012 gold medalist Aly Raisman finished first and second.

Nonetheless, Douglas played a crucial role in the team’s victory, earning her third Olympic gold medal by contributing a score of 15.766 on the uneven bars in the medal round.
