Emma Hayes admitted that Chelsea’s chances of clinching the Women’s Super League (WSL) title are slim following their heartbreaking defeat to Liverpool.
The 4-3 loss dealt a significant blow to Chelsea’s title aspirations, leaving league leaders Manchester City in a commanding position.
With just three matches remaining, Chelsea, the reigning WSL champions, trail City by six points, with the latter having two games left to play.
Despite taking an early lead through Aggie Beever-Jones’ ninth-minute header, Chelsea succumbed to goals from Sophie Roman Haug and Gemma Bonner.
Although Beever-Jones managed a late equalizer and Teagan Micah’s own goal provided temporary hope, Bonner’s stoppage-time header sealed the win for Liverpool.
This season will be Hayes’ final one as Chelsea’s manager, as she agreed to join the USWNT as head coach, inking a deal in November and becoming the highest-paid coach in women’s football. During her tenure, she guided Chelsea to six WSL titles.
Chelsea’s next match comes on Sunday against Bristol City.
