Chappell Roan And Dan Nigro Hint At The Direction Of The Singer’s Upcoming Album

Dan Nigro has commenced work on the upcoming album of pop singer Chappell Roan, which serves as the follow-up to her 2023 debut record, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.” Both Nigro and Roan hinted at the project during their appearance at the ASCAP Pop Awards on Wednesday night, indicating that their collaboration on the album is in its initial stages.

“I’m feeling good about it, but at the same time we are literally right at the beginning of the recording process, it’s only been a few days,” said Nigro. “But when I have Chappell in studio, it’s always good fun — she’s amazing.

We’re doing a lot of sitting around and talking at this point and there’s moments where she becomes the Chappell you see on stage, but then there’s moments where it comes down. We’re writing ballads, some sad songs where its just the piano and her voice.”

Their partnership dates back to 2020, with their most recent success being the widely popular “Good Luck, Babe!” The song marked the pop singer-songwriter’s debut on the Hot 100 chart dated April 20, entering at No. 77 with over six million streams, as reported by Luminate.

Regarding the forthcoming album, Roan states that there isn’t a definitive agenda. She expresses her intention to continue writing songs she loves, creating music she’s proud of, and sharing it with the world. Despite expectations, she admits to not having a clear outlook on the album’s direction at this juncture.

Nigro commended Roan’s standout performance at Coachella during the second weekend, particularly highlighting her memorable speech while adorned in a vibrant pink butterfly costume and full drag makeup before performing her song “My Kink Is Karma.”

“First of all, that performance was insane,” says Nigro. “Watching that speech in real time was incredible – I was actually really anticipating if she was going to have the same speech as weekend one and of course she did not! Our friends were filming our reactions, it was the most incredible thing ever.”

Roan’s distinctive style, characterized by vivid visuals and a bold sound, has propelled her career to new heights in recent months. Although she missed attending this year’s Met Gala, she humorously muses about her hypothetical attendance, envisioning herself wearing something controversial and possibly showing up in drag. She jokingly emphasizes her desire to make a spectacle if she ever graces the Met Gala in the future.

At the ASCAP Pop Awards held at the opulent Houdini Estate, Roan presented Nigro with the Songwriter of the Year award, which he shares with Olivia Rodrigo. Among the additional honorees were Charli XCX, Universal Music Publishing Group, and the songwriters of the year for “Calm Down” by Rema and Selena Gomez.
