Braves Standout Ronald Acuña Jr. Sidelined For The Remainder Of The Season Due To Left ACL Tear

Star player Ronald Acuña Jr. of the Atlanta Braves will miss the rest of the season due to a tear to his left knee’s anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) sustained during Sunday’s 8-1 victory over Pittsburgh.

The reigning NL MVP kicked off the game with a double to right-center field off Martín Pérez. Acuña’s left knee gave way as he attempted to steal base with Marcell Ozuna at bat, heading toward third base. He was clearly in pain in his left leg as he lay on the ground for a few minutes before getting help and getting up on his own.

Acuña was initially diagnosed by the Braves with left knee soreness. However, following an MRI on Sunday night, the team confirmed a complete ACL tear that necessitates season-ending surgery.

This is not Acuña’s first ACL injury, having torn his right ACL on July 20, 2021. After Sunday’s victory, the 26-year-old outfielder, who was wearing a brace, said that this injury felt less serious.

Acuña disclosed that he was planning to go to third base, thinking catcher Joey Bart would return a slow throw to the mound. His knee twisted as a result of the unexpectedly quick throw, which forced him to abruptly pivot back to second base.

Batting .250 with four homers and 15 RBIs in 49 games, the four-time All-Star had a standout season last year, hitting a career-high .337 with 41 homers and 106 RBIs.

The Braves also lost All-Star right-hander Spencer Strider on April 13 after he had season-ending surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow. Acuña’s absence is a result of this. Austin Riley, the third baseman, is currently listed as day-to-day due to a left intercostal strain, and Sean Murphy, the catcher, is still listed as out for 10 days due to an oblique injury he suffered on opening day.
