After 114 years, the Boy Scouts of America has announced its name change to Scouting America, aiming to prioritize inclusivity amid financial and legal challenges.

This rebrand marks a significant departure for an organization steeped in tradition, which historically excluded gay youths and girls until recent policy changes. The decision, unveiled at the organization’s annual meeting in Florida, seeks to revitalize membership numbers.

Roger Krone, the organization’s current president and CEO, expressed a commitment to fostering inclusivity, envisioning a future where all youth in America feel welcomed in their programs.

The official name change will take effect on February 8, 2025, coinciding with the organization’s 115th anniversary. Over the past decade, the Boy Scouts of America has made significant strides in inclusivity, welcoming gay youth in 2013, followed by the acceptance of gay adult leaders in 2015. The admission of girls into Cub Scouts in 2018 and Scouts BSA in 2019 further expanded its reach, with thousands of girls achieving the prestigious Eagle Scout rank.

However, this evolution has not been without controversy, particularly concerning its relationship with the Girl Scouts of the USA, which has criticized the Boy Scouts’ recruitment of girls.

Despite social media backlash, including concerns about removing the word “boy” from the name, the organization remains committed to adapting to changing times while staying true to its scouting mission.

Rebranding efforts aim to attract new members while maintaining support from existing stakeholders. While some view the change as unnecessary, others see it as a strategic move to propel the organization forward.

Despite legal battles and financial woes, including a $2.4 billion bankruptcy reorganization plan, the Boy Scouts of America remains steadfast in its mission to provide a safe and inclusive environment for all scouts.
