Bayer Leverkusen clinched a dramatic last-minute equalizer, securing their spot in the Europa League final and establishing a new milestone with an unbeaten streak of 49 matches across all competitions.
Previously tied with Benfica at 48 unbeaten games in all competitions, Leverkusen now holds the outright record since the inception of European competition, as confirmed by UEFA.
Under the guidance of Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen sealed their berth in the Europa League final by triumphing over Roma with a 4-2 aggregate victory. This included a crucial last-minute goal from Josip Stanisic in the second leg, ensuring their undefeated run remained intact.
Roma seized the lead just before halftime with a penalty converted by Leandro Paredes following a foul on Sardar Azmoun by Jonathan Tah. Paredes doubled their advantage from the spot in the 66th minute after a handball by Adam Hlozek.
In the dying moments of the game, a Leverkusen corner confused the Roma defense, resulting in Gianluca Mancini inadvertently diverting the ball into his own net at the far post.
Deep into stoppage time, Stanisic further solidified Leverkusen’s place in the record books with a skillful maneuver into the box, securing the crucial equalizer.
Having already claimed the Bundesliga title, Leverkusen is also set to contest the German Cup final.
