Atalanta Secures UEFA Europa League Title With 3-0 Victory Over Bayer Leverkusen

Ademola Lookman delivered a spectacular hat-trick as Atalanta defeated Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 in the Europa League final on Wednesday, breaking Bayer’s 51-match unbeaten streak and securing Atalanta’s first trophy in 61 years.

Lookman became the first player to score a hat-trick in a European final since 1975, marking Atalanta’s first-ever continental triumph.

“One of the best nights of my life. Amazing performance from the team,” said Lookman.

“We’ve got to celebrate, we made history tonight.”

The Bergamo-based team has long been overshadowed by nearby giants AC Milan and Inter Milan. However, under the guidance of Gian Piero Gasperini, Atalanta has entered a golden era, reaching the Champions League four times and now adding silverware to their achievements.

Leverkusen, known for their late comebacks during their undefeated run to their first Bundesliga title, couldn’t recover this time from a slow start.

“It’s a shame that the time it didn’t work out for us was in a final,” said Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka.

“It’s bitter, definitely, we lost a final today but we go on and we’ll make up for it on Saturday (in the German Cup final).

Atalanta’s determined play in the early stages paid off just 12 minutes into the match. Davide Zappacosta reached the by-line and Lookman capitalized on Exequiel Palacios’ lapse in concentration to score at the back post.

Lookman, who has experienced a somewhat nomadic career with loan spells at Fulham and Leicester after being let go by RB Leipzig, has found his place in Bergamo. His performance in the final has cemented his status as a hero at Atalanta.
