At least 66 individuals have been reported dead in Faryab province, northern Afghanistan, due to recent flooding, marking another tragic event amidst a series of disasters in the nation.

Asmatullah Moradi, the spokesperson for the Faryab governor, conveyed that heavy floods across various districts of Faryab province on Saturday led to significant human and financial losses, resulting in casualties, injuries, and missing persons.

The flooding not only claimed 66 lives but also inflicted damage on over 1,500 residences, submerged around 400 hectares of farmland, and caused substantial livestock casualties.

This calamity follows another unfortunate incident where 18 individuals lost their lives to floods in the same province just a day earlier, while adjacent Ghor province also witnessed devastation, with flash flooding claiming 50 lives and causing extensive destruction in Ferozkoh city.

Afghanistan’s susceptibility to natural disasters, coupled with its vulnerability to climate change, underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the country, exacerbated by the recent surge in rainfall.

In a grim reminder of the nation’s vulnerability, more than 300 individuals perished in flash flooding in northern Baghlan province just over a week ago, underscoring the dire situation in a country heavily reliant on agriculture for sustenance.

This deluge follows a prolonged drought, further straining Afghanistan’s capacity to address climate-related impacts, as the nation grapples with diminishing aid in the aftermath of the Taliban’s resurgence and foreign troop withdrawals.

The shortfall in aid has compounded Afghanistan’s woes, exacerbating the plight of its citizens amidst escalating crises and mounting criticism of the Taliban’s governance, particularly its restrictions on women.
