Arraez Plays Flawlessly In His First Padres Home Game

Early on Friday night, Arraez received a standing ovation while playing at his new home ballpark. A few hours later, in front of a sold-out Petco Park, he sent those supporters home happy by lining a walk-off single to end a tight pitchers’ duel and give San Diego a 2-1 victory.

Starting pitcher Michael King had a strong effort, and Arraez’s spectacular walk-off made sure it wouldn’t be wasted. King pitched seven scoreless innings while striking out eleven against what was arguably the toughest lineup in the sport.

Luis Campusano gave the Padres an early lead with a solo home run off Tyler Glasnow.

The eighth-inning stalemate between Los Angeles and the team only served to set up Arraez’s heroics. Campusano doubled to start the ninth inning, followed by Dodgers righty A fastball was left over the center of the plate by Michael Grove.

Arraez is one of those exceptional batters who can hit the ball wherever he wants to. And he carried it out precisely. As soon as pinch runner Tyler Wade emerged to score from second, his teammates surrounded Arraez on the infield dirt. A craze erupted around Petco Park.

Arraez is a two-time hitting champion, so the Padres made a startling deal for him early in the season for a variety of reasons. To counterbalance their offense, they required a lefty bat. An on-base threat was what they needed to top their order. To extend—really, complete—their lineup, they required one more hitter.

When it comes down to it, though, the Padres signed Arraez because they want to win. Now is when they want to triumph. The team most directly in the way of that goal and the favorite in the NL West are the Dodgers.

For Arraez, it’s been a successful beginning. He used Thursday’s off day to pick up his wife, mother, and kid from the airport and attempt to resolve his housing problem. He batted.375 in his debut week with his new team, finishing with his best hit to date.

Arraez’s home debut was overshadowed by the developing duel on the mound for the majority of the evening. For seven frames, Glasnow dominated and struck out ten Padres. King was superior, though.

The Dodgers managed just two hits off King, both of which were weak singles into opposite field. King produced a career-high 19 swings and misses with his dazzling movement on both his sinker and changeup.

Freddie Freeman’s sacrifice fly gave the Dodgers the lead and their only run in that contest between the two bullpens. However, Ha-Seong King skillfully executed a double play on Max Muncy’s sluggish grounder, saving Yuki Matsui from trouble.

Robert Suarez of the Padres completed a scoreless top of the ninth inning to carry on his early-season domination. Then, with the winning run on second base, the newest Padre arrived—the most productive hitter in the league in terms of hitting average during the previous few years.

Arraez did not take long to win over the confidence of his new squad, new city, and new management.
