Gary O’Neil expressed frustration at yet another VAR decision against Wolves, deeming their disallowed equalizer “one of the worst decisions I’ve ever witnessed”.
Max Kilman’s 99th-minute header was nullified as Tawanda Chirewa was judged offside and obstructing Lukasz Fabianski, preventing him from making the save, thus interfering with the play.
Referee Tony Harrington reviewed the incident on the pitchside monitor, ultimately disallowing the goal, and sparking chaotic scenes at full-time. Several Wolves staff and players received bookings for their protests.
Manager O’Neil, having already received two yellow cards this season, refrained from further confrontation, although he expressed his displeasure with the officials in a post-match interview with Sky Sports.
Scorer Kilman echoed O’Neil’s sentiment, stating, “To be honest, I’ve never seen anything like it. We’re all gutted and we deserved something from that game.”
Wolves chairman Jeff Shi later questioned the effectiveness of VAR, highlighting the widespread lack of dispute over the goal’s validity among players, coaches, fans, and even the match officials themselves.
“It is our sincere hope that the Premier League and PGMOL recognise the importance of addressing these concerns to uphold the integrity of the competition and demonstrate why the Premier League is regarded as the best in the world.”
