The ongoing legal dispute between former spouses Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt concerning their once jointly-owned winery remains contentious, with both parties vigorously asserting their positions.
In a recent legal submission obtained by PEOPLE, Jolie’s legal team contends that Pitt subjected her to physical abuse, asserting that this mistreatment predates the widely publicized 2016 plane incident.
Jolie’s attorneys assert, “Pitt’s pattern of physical abuse towards Jolie began well before the family’s September 2016 plane journey from France to Los Angeles, with this flight marking the first instance of him directing physical abuse towards the children, prompting Jolie to leave him immediately.”
Neither Pitt’s nor Jolie’s representatives responded immediately to EW’s inquiry regarding this fresh allegation. Pitt has consistently denied any allegations of abuse.
In February 2022, Pitt initiated legal action against Jolie for selling her stake in the French vineyard Chateau Miraval, a property they jointly acquired in 2008 and where they exchanged vows in 2014, without his consent. Jolie retaliated with a countersuit, claiming she attempted to sell her share to Pitt first, but negotiations faltered when his team insisted on a nondisclosure agreement barring her from discussing the 2016 plane incident publicly.
Previously, Jolie and her legal team alleged that during a private plane trip in 2016, Pitt assaulted Jolie and their children. Investigations by both the FBI and the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services ensued. The latter determined that Pitt had not abused the children, and the FBI opted not to pursue criminal charges against the actor.
Responding to Jolie’s legal filing, Pitt’s attorneys submitted a motion requesting Jolie to disclose any additional nondisclosure agreements she may have entered into with third parties, including her personal staff.
In 2019, a judge granted Pitt and Jolie legal single status, while they continue to co-parent their six children: Maddox (22), Pax (20), Zahara (19), Shiloh (17), and twins Vivienne and Knox (15).
