The New York Knicks expressed strong disapproval towards Joel Embiid’s flagrant foul on Mitchell Robinson during the first quarter of Philadelphia’s 125-114 win in Game 3, labeling it as “dirty” and emphasizing Robinson’s luck in avoiding severe injury.

According to Knicks guard Donte DiVincenzo, the incident was undeniably “dirty” in nature, echoing the team’s sentiment.

The contentious moment unfolded with 4:34 remaining in the opening quarter, as Embiid attempted to draw an offensive foul, fell to the floor, and then reached out towards Robinson’s right leg upon landing.

Robinson, already nursing a left ankle injury, exacerbated his condition following the play, eventually being ruled out with a left ankle sprain at halftime.

Reviewing the incident to determine its severity, officials deliberated between a Flagrant 1 and Flagrant 2. Ultimately, it was designated as a Flagrant 1, a decision supported by both the on-court officials and the replay center.

Embiid, reflecting on the event, recalled a previous injury incurred when Jonathan Kuminga fell on him, leading to surgery and a lengthy absence from play.

Further controversy arose earlier in the quarter when Embiid collided with Isaiah Hartenstein, resulting in an offensive foul. Hartenstein, while acknowledging the impact, attributed the issue to contact with Embiid’s knee brace.

Embiid himself expressed confusion over the alteration of the call from a technical foul to an offensive foul upon review.

“I just think the game being physical, you look at the first replay, where I get bumped and I use a swim move to not get hit, and then I got an offensive foul and then that gets checked … I never seen it, where you call an offensive foul after checking it on the monitor, if you didn’t call it on the on the actual play,” Embiid said. “That was the first for me.”

With Robinson’s status uncertain for the remainder of the series, the Knicks face a challenging situation in containing Embiid, who recorded a playoff career-high of 50 points in the game.

“It’s always difficult when he’s out,” Hartenstein said of Robinson, who didn’t speak to reporters. “I think together we’re probably the best center duo in the league right now. So when he’s out it’s a little frustrating, especially because I was in foul trouble. So I think Precious [Achiuwa] came in and did a good job. We just have to do a better job and be more physical.”
