Crystal Palace’s Dominant Performance Puts West Ham In Turmoil, Raising Questions For David Moyes

Extending David Moyes’ tenure at West Ham for two more years seems increasingly improbable. While the Europa League exit to Bayer Leverkusen could be forgiven given their form, the manner of West Ham’s defeat to Crystal Palace likely undermines Moyes’ hopes for an extension. The defeat was punishing, and Moyes struggled to conceal his disappointment as an old adversary returned to haunt him.

Moyes dismissed any link between West Ham’s poor performance and his uncertain future, insisting it was unrelated. Nevertheless, speculation about his contract status remains, with Moyes himself acknowledging it might now be out of his control.

Two seasons ago, Oliver Glasner’s Eintracht Frankfurt denied Moyes’ Hammers in the Europa League semi-final. Had Palace not appointed Glasner, Moyes might have been considered for the potential vacancy at the London Stadium.

Last week’s tactical triumph at Anfield showcased Glasner’s progressive approach, contrasting with Moyes’ perceived lack of innovation. While Moyes has provided stability and a European trophy, critics argue his teams lack fluidity and entertainment value, leaving fans wanting more.

Moyes admitted the first half against Palace was among the worst performances he’s seen from his team in three years. Palace, under Glasner, benefitted from the inclusion of Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise, who added flair and creativity to their attack.

Palace’s play exhibited an expressive style rarely seen under Moyes’ reign, with Mateta’s goal epitomizing their dominance. Moyes’ frustration was palpable as Palace ran riot, leaving West Ham’s defense in disarray.

Despite a slight improvement from West Ham in the second half, Palace remained dominant, with Olise and Eze continuing to torment the opposition. Moyes’ chances of securing an extension seem increasingly bleak, with Palace’s emphatic victory casting further doubt on his future.
