A video promoting a cosmetic dentistry practice in Texas, shared by South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, has sparked controversy.
Now, a member of the South Dakota Legislature is urging an official inquiry into the Republican governor’s endorsement.
Democratic state Senator Reynold Nesiba revealed on Wednesday that he has requested the Government Operations and Audit Committee, of which he is a member, to address Noem’s promotional video at its upcoming July meeting.
Nesiba expressed his concerns to The Associated Press and Dakota News Now, highlighting the peculiarity of the nearly 5-minute video showcasing Noem’s experience at Smile Texas.
In the video, posted to Noem’s X account on Monday, she praises the Houston-area practice, names the dentists, and expresses gratitude for their services.
Nesiba finds the entire situation questionable and believes the committee should delve into the financial aspects surrounding Noem’s video.
Additionally, he questions whether the promotion conflicts with the investments made by South Dakotans to promote their state or if it’s geared towards boosting Noem’s national profile.
Attempts to obtain clarification from Noem’s spokesperson regarding these concerns remained unanswered.
State Representative Ernie Otten, the Republican chair of the Government Operations and Audit Committee, has yet to respond to inquiries regarding Nesiba’s request.
Despite Nesiba’s efforts, Otten reportedly informed him that there is no basis for the committee to address the matter.
The committee meeting is scheduled for July, coinciding with the expected announcement of the presumptive GOP nominee’s running mate.
Despite backlash over the Smile Texas video, Noem proceeded to share more promotional content. On Thursday, she uploaded a brief video on X advertising a footwear store, Fit My Feet, which has multiple locations in South Dakota and the Midwest.
