South Carolina Basketball Suffers Another Defeat Against Auburn, But March Madness Awaits for the Gamecocks

Late in the first half, South Carolina basketball coach Lamont Paris expressed frustration with yet another successful jump shot by Auburn, shaking his head in disbelief.

Facing the relentless onslaught of the Tigers’ offense was nothing new for Paris and his Gamecocks, as they had previously experienced a similar defeat.

In the 2024 SEC Tournament quarterfinals at Bridgestone Arena, Auburn dominated South Carolina with a final score of 86-55, mirroring their previous encounter in February when the Tigers secured a decisive 101-61 victory on their home court.

For South Carolina, this defeat represents a significant missed opportunity, especially considering Mississippi State’s upset victory over top-seeded Tennessee just before their own game.

Despite Paris’s hopes for a different outcome, Auburn’s impressive shooting performance continued, although not quite matching their previous display, with shooting percentages of 49.3% from the field and 47.4% from beyond the arc.

Auburn’s dominance was evident in the first half, where they amassed 46 points while holding South Carolina to a 20-point deficit at halftime. In the second half, the Tigers maintained control, effectively shutting down any chances of a Gamecocks comeback.

South Carolina struggled immensely on offense, recording a season-low shooting percentage of 28.1% from the field. Although BJ Mack led the team with 14 points, his performance was marred by inefficiency, shooting just 3-of-12 from the field.
