In Charlotte, the UNC basketball team faced off against Wagner College in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament’s opening round, turning the city into a vibrant display of Carolina blue.

The Tar Heels secured a commanding 90-62 victory over Wagner, propelling them into the round of 32.

Long before the game’s commencement, devoted Tar Heels supporters embarked on journeys spanning various distances to rally behind their team.

Lorraine Johnson, hailing from the Atlanta area, was among those who converged outside the team’s hotel to bid them a spirited farewell en route to the Spectrum Center.

Having recently retired, Johnson seized the chance to journey to Charlotte and stand behind the players in their quest for victory.

Shannon Bridges and her mother, Jean Rome, made the trip from Lincolnton, underscoring the widespread dedication to the Tar Heels.

As the top seed in the region, North Carolina boasts a staggering 18 appearances in this coveted position, the most in NCAA history.

Johnson expressed her joy at being able to cheer on the team firsthand.

Following Thursday’s triumph, UNC advances to the round of 32, where they will clash with Michigan State on Saturday.

According to UNC, this marks the Tar Heels’ 53rd appearance in the NCAA tournament. Notably, their last national championship victory occurred in 2017, coinciding with their status as a No. 1 seed.
