Lionel Messi will have a day off on Sunday as Inter Miami hosts CF Montreal, with teammates Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets also omitted from the starting lineup.

The 36-year-old Argentine star has played every minute of Miami’s three MLS matches in 2024, as well as in their recent Concacaf Champions League draw against Nashville SC on Thursday. Assistant coach Javier Morales hinted on Saturday that Messi would be rested ahead of the return leg against Nashville.

Although Messi scored to secure a 2-2 draw against Nashville, he also endured a harsh tackle on his shin late in the game. Morales described it as merely a “knock” and stated it wouldn’t affect the decision on his Sunday participation, although Messi was later officially listed as questionable due to a shin issue on MLS’ player status report.

Suarez, who netted Miami’s other goal against Nashville, faces a situation similar to Messi, having also started all four games this season. The 37-year-old could potentially be rested against Montreal.

While Morales didn’t confirm his lineup, former Barcelona player Jordi Alba is set to feature against Montreal, as hinted by the assistant coach yesterday.

Miami is gearing up to host Nashville in the return leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup round-of-16 tie on Wednesday.
