International Women’s Day (IWD) 2024, observed on March 8, is a global celebration of women’s achievements and a call to action for gender equality. This year’s theme, ‘Inspire Inclusion,’ urges society to break down barriers and foster environments where women from all backgrounds are valued and respected.

The IWD 2024 campaign promotes the celebration and acceptance of women’s diversity in terms of “race, age, ability, faith, body image, and how they identify”.

“When we inspire others to understand and value women’s inclusion, we forge a better world. And when women themselves are inspired to be included, there’s a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment. Collectively, let’s forge a more inclusive world for women.

As we celebrate IWD, it’s also a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges women face. According to Jacques Olivier, who is a Research Consultant at Euromonitor International,

“Despite the fact that real income growth over the last five years was higher for women, women’s average disposable income remains 31% lower than those of men worldwide. Income inequality remains one of the most significant obstacles faced by woman in reaching gender equality.

While women still trail behind their men counterparts in terms of disposable incomes, women in North America have seen the largest increase with an uplift of 38% in their disposable incomes, compared to the global average of 23%, over the last five years.

International Women’s Day is more than a day of recognition; it’s a global movement that has been active for over a century. The first IWD was held in March 1911, and since then, it has become a day of collective activism that belongs to everyone committed to women’s equality.

This year, individuals and organizations are called to action. From questioning the absence of women in various spaces to calling out discrimination and inequality, every action counts.

Organizations can #InspireInclusion by promoting women’s economic empowerment, supporting female leadership, and involving women in decision-making and STEM fields. Infrastructure should meet the needs of women and girls, and efforts should be made to provide access to quality education, healthcare, and opportunities in sports and the arts.

On an individual level, understanding and valuing the inclusion of women and girls is crucial. Sharing this knowledge and support with others can amplify the impact. As we observe IWD 2024, let’s commit to inspiring inclusion and forging a more equitable world for all women.
