A Romanian court has approved the extradition of controversial influencer Andrew Tate to the United Kingdom, but has decided to defer the extradition until the conclusion of his ongoing criminal trial in Romania.
On Tuesday, the court announced its decision to release Tate and his brother Tristan from police custody immediately, following a 24-hour detention period while awaiting the ruling on the UK arrest warrant.
In a statement, the court of appeals declared its intent to execute the arrest warrant and postpone the transfer of the requested individuals until the final verdict is reached in the criminal case being heard at the Bucharest court.
The allegations against Tate and his brother Tristan stem from accusations of sexual aggression dating back to the years 2012-2015, leading to the issuance of a warrant by Westminster Magistrates Court in London. Despite the claims, the brothers’ PR team has vehemently denied any involvement in the alleged misconduct.
According to UK police sources cited by Reuters, the Tates are subjects of an ongoing investigation into allegations of rape and human trafficking, with law enforcement agencies collaborating with Romanian authorities on the matter.
“We appreciate the Bucharest Court of Appeal’s decision to postpone the extradition of Andrew and Tristan Tate,” Eugen Vidineac, the legal counsel for the defendants, said in a statement.
“This ruling provides an opportunity for the brothers to participate fully in their defence and for the legal process to proceed in a transparent manner.”
