In a thrilling encounter, Budu Zivzivadze’s brace propelled Georgia to a 2-0 triumph over Luxembourg in their Euro 2024 playoff semi-final. The match, marred by controversial decisions, saw Luxembourg reduced to 10 men and a disallowed goal.
Both teams, eager to secure their maiden major tournament appearance, battled fiercely on a rainy night in Tbilisi. Georgia emerged victorious, edging closer to their Euro 2024 dreams. They await the winner between Greece and Kazakhstan for Tuesday’s playoff final, to be hosted in Georgia.
From the onset, Georgia dominated possession, backed by passionate home support, while Luxembourg struggled to mount any significant threats, failing to register a single shot on target in the opening half.
The breakthrough arrived just before halftime, courtesy of Zivzivadze, who capitalized on a defensive error to fire home from close range, sending the home crowd into jubilation.
Despite Luxembourg’s efforts to claw back into the game, their hopes were dashed by controversy. A disallowed goal and a red card for Maxime Chanot further complicated their task.
Georgia sealed the victory in the 63rd minute, with Zivzivadze once again finding the net, this time latching onto a cross from Levan Shengelia.
The defeat marks the end of Luxembourg’s qualifying journey, while Georgia moves one step closer to their Euro 2024 aspirations.
