Ex-Vice President Mike Pence Declares Non-Endorsement Of Trump

Former Vice President Mike Pence has announced his decision not to support Donald Trump in the upcoming 2024 election. Pence made this declaration during an interview with Fox News Channel on Friday, marking his first public statement since Trump emerged as the presumptive GOP nominee. Despite previously running against Trump for their party’s nomination and dropping out before voting commenced last year, Pence affirmed his non-endorsement.

This choice aligns Pence with a growing list of former senior Trump administration officials who have refrained from endorsing their ex-boss’s bid for a return to the Oval Office. While many Republican members of Congress and GOP officials have thrown their support behind Trump, a vocal minority continues to oppose his candidacy.

Pence’s decision also represents a significant shift, considering his longstanding reputation as one of Trump’s most loyal allies. However, he distanced himself from Trump following the events of January 6, 2021, when he refused to comply with Trump’s unconstitutional efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. During the Capitol riot, Pence was compelled to evacuate to a Senate loading dock as rioters chanted threats against him.

Despite having signed a pledge to support the Republican nominee during the primary debates, Pence later expressed serious reservations about Trump’s conduct and policies. Throughout the campaign, he criticized the party’s reluctance to aid Ukraine and urged fellow Republicans to reject the “siren song of populism” advocated by Trump and his supporters.

During the Fox interview, Pence emphasized his pride in his and Trump’s accomplishments while in office but underscored their divergent views on various issues. He declined to disclose his voting intentions, stating that he would keep his choice private, though he ruled out supporting Joe Biden.
