Don Lemon revealed on Wednesday that his collaboration with Elon Musk ended disastrously, following Lemon’s interview with the unpredictable billionaire for the inaugural episode of his new self-run web series.
“Elon publicly encouraged me to join X with a new show, saying I would have his ‘full support,’” Lemon said in a statement, adding that he took Musk at his word that he was “interested in working directly with diverse voices.”
During an interview with CNN’s Erin Burnett, Lemon discussed his conversation with Musk and shared snippets from their 90-minute dialogue, covering various subjects.
Lemon confronted Musk about the surge in hate speech on X since the tech mogul assumed control of the platform, questioning whether he felt accountable for moderating hateful content.
Additionally, Lemon inquired about Musk’s recent meeting with former President Donald Trump, confirming CNN’s report on the encounter held in Palm Beach.
Musk clarified that Trump, despite facing legal challenges, did not solicit financial assistance from him.
Addressing Musk’s use of ketamine and its potential impact on his security clearance, Lemon mentioned Musk’s prescription for the drug.
In a social media statement, Lemon characterized his interview with Musk as “respectful and wide-ranging,” highlighting the absence of interview restrictions.
Freedom of Speech Debate
Lemon challenged Musk’s claim of being a “free speech absolutist” in a social media video, citing concerns over ketamine use, security clearance, and antisemitism.
Although the interview remains unreleased, sources indicate Musk’s dissatisfaction with Lemon’s probing questions.
X defended Musk’s decision to terminate the agreement with Lemon, prompting Musk to criticize Lemon and CNN publicly.
Despite Lemon’s camp anticipating fulfillment of financial terms, no formal contract was signed, although mutual understanding was apparent.
Musk’s Recruitment of Lemon
Musk previously encouraged Lemon to bring his show to X, emphasizing support without exclusivity agreements.
While professing belief in free speech, Musk has restricted critics’ speech and promoted conspiracy theories, leading to advertiser exodus from X.
Lemon’s departure from CNN in the wake of controversial remarks about Nikki Haley occurred without a specified reason, leaving him “stunned” and offering apologies for his comments.
