Analysis Of Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Carlton Davis III Trade To Detroit Lions

On Monday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers orchestrated a significant move, opting to trade cornerback Carlton Davis III to the Detroit Lions, diverging from the usual free agency signings and departures.

In a twist of fate reminiscent of ‘if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em,’ Davis III will transition from the Buccaneers to the very team that ended his former team’s season merely two months ago.

As compensation for Davis’s services, with one year remaining on his current contract, the Lions are relinquishing a 2024 3rd-round pick (No. 92) to Tampa Bay.

Additionally, the Buccaneers are including two sixth-round picks – one for the current year and another for the following – while simultaneously trimming $6.3 million from their 2024 salary cap obligations.

CBS Sports’ Jeff Kerr assessed the deal, awarding the Buccaneers a ‘B’ letter grade, while the Lions received a ‘B+’.

Originally drafted by Tampa Bay in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Davis spent his initial six seasons with the franchise, securing a Super Bowl victory along the way.

His standout performance occurred during the Super Bowl-winning 2020 season, where he tallied four interceptions in the regular season, contributing to the Buccaneers’ eighth-ranked scoring defense.

The possibility of Detroit negotiating an extension with Davis to alleviate his $14.35 million cap hit in this trade remains uncertain. However, it appears plausible that discussions will ensue with the seasoned veteran.

Davis, set to turn 28 on New Year’s Eve, anticipates facing his former team in his new home, as the Lions are slated to host the Buccaneers in 2024.
