In a recent court ruling, the armorer of the film “Rust,” Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter.
This verdict comes after actor Alec Baldwin fatally shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in October 2021 during a rehearsal on the movie set. The incident has since seen significant legal developments.
The conviction of Gutierrez-Reed brings a new dimension to the case, as previously, an assistant director had entered a no-contest plea for negligent handling of a firearm. While the armorer faced an additional accusation of tampering with evidence, the jury acquitted her of this charge.
Post-verdict, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was taken into custody, with her attorney announcing plans to appeal the decision. The sentence may lead to a maximum of 18 months of incarceration and a penalty of $5,000. However, the date for sentencing has yet to be scheduled by Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer.
Alec Baldwin, who also served as a co-producer on “Rust,” faces his trial in July after being indicted on involuntary manslaughter charges. Baldwin has entered a not guilty plea.
As the legal battles continue, the film industry and the public alike await further developments in this case that has sparked widespread discussions on safety protocols in movie production.
