Authorities implemented a lockdown at the Maryland State House in Annapolis during the late afternoon of Thursday, instructing occupants to remain indoors.
According to police reports provided to 11 News, the lockdown was initiated following a threatening call, prompting armed officers to swiftly converge on the building around 5 p.m., with guns drawn, and some individuals were evacuated. The incident appeared to originate from the ground floor.
Law enforcement officials stated that no suspicious items were discovered.
Collaborating with Capitol Police and Maryland State Police, Annapolis police officers conducted a thorough search of the building. The top floor was cleared, and efforts are underway to ensure the bottom floor and surrounding grounds are secure before allowing individuals to resume normal activities within the complex.
SkyTeam 11, Baltimore’s sole news helicopter, captured footage showing a significant presence of police and emergency vehicles surrounding the State House complex. Police vehicles blocked every entrance around State Circle.
In response to inquiries, the governor’s office issued a statement indicating, “The Maryland State House is presently under lockdown due to a security threat. Further details are unavailable at this time. Staff, personnel, and community members on the premises are advised to shelter in place and comply with instructions from Capitol Police or other law enforcement personnel.”
The shelter-in-place directive was extended to include the House and Senate office buildings.
