Cadiz fans expressed their discontent during their team’s match against Real Betis by throwing plastic ponchos onto the pitch, prompting an early conclusion to the game. Real Betis had established a 2-0 lead with goals from Willian Jose and Pablo Fornals, the latter scoring his first goal for the club following his transfer from West Ham for £6.8 million.
However, the referee decided to end the match in the third minute of four additional minutes due to the ponchos littering the Estadio Nuevo Mirandilla pitch.
Currently, Cadiz occupies the 18th position out of 20 teams, finding themselves in La Liga’s relegation zone. Throughout the season, they have managed to win only two out of 24 league matches and haven’t secured a La Liga victory since their 3-1 home win against Villarreal on 1 September.
Despite finishing 14th in the 2022-23 season and entering their fourth consecutive season in Spain’s top flight, this season has been particularly challenging for Cadiz, marked by notable defeats such as their loss to fourth-tier side Arandina in the Copa del Rey.
Following a series of disappointing results, Cadiz took action by dismissing head coach Sergio Gonzalez and appointing former Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino as his replacement.
The protests witnessed at Cadiz coincided with similar demonstrations during two matches in Germany, where fans expressed dissatisfaction with an investment proposal by the German Football Association. In the Bundesliga 2 match between Hannover and Hamburg, Hamburg fans delayed play by chaining six padlocks to the goal and netting during halftime, requiring intervention to resume the game.
Similarly, during the Borussia Dortmund-Freiburg Bundesliga match, spectators threw tennis balls and chocolate gold coins onto the pitch behind the goal defended by the hosts in the first half.
