Victor Osimhen marked his inaugural goal at an Africa Cup of Nations tournament on Sunday, yet Nigeria faced disappointment in failing to secure a victory against Equatorial Guinea during their Group A opener.
In the 38th minute, Osimhen demonstrated his prowess with a header from close range, capitalizing on a cross delivered by former Everton and Fulham winger Ademola Lookman. This crucial goal leveled the playing field after Equatorial Guinea’s Iban Salvador had earlier stunned with a goal just 100 seconds into the match.
Despite numerous opportunities, including a one-on-one chance missed by Osimhen, Nigeria couldn’t clinch a win, resulting in a 1-1 final score. Osimhen’s goal tally now stands at an impressive 21 in 28 international appearances for the Super Eagles.
The prolific Napoli striker, who earned the 2023 African Men’s Footballer of the Year award in December, showcased his scoring prowess once again.
This draw occurred in the second Group A match, following Ivory Coast’s earlier 2-0 triumph against Guinea-Bissau over the weekend.
