Ranked third in Africa, Tunisia exits the Cup of Nations after a goalless draw against South Africa in a lackluster Group E finale in Korhogo on Wednesday.
Despite a late opportunity for victory, substitute Haythem Jouini’s header soared well above the crossbar. Following Algeria, Tunisia becomes the second top-10-ranked nation eliminated in the opening round.
Mali clinched Group E with a 0-0 draw against Namibia, securing qualification for the knockout stage along with second-placed South Africa.
Veteran captain Youssef Msakni was dropped by Tunisia after a lackluster performance, with defender Yassine Meriah assuming the captaincy.
South Africa, maintaining the same starting lineup after a four-goal victory over Namibia, featured eight players from the dominant domestic club, Mamelodi Sundowns. Tunisia squandered three half-chances in the first half, while South Africa’s Percy Tau and Thapelo Morena posed threats.
Despite Tunisia’s five goal attempts in the first half, none were on target in a match observed by CAF president Patrice Motsepe. The second half’s start was delayed for synchronization with the Mali-Namibia match. As the hour mark approached, Msakni, earning his 100th cap, replaced Ben Slimane.
Earlier this month, Msakni joined the ranks of players, including Rigobert Song, Ahmed Hassan, and Andre ‘Dede’ Ayew, to feature in eight Cup of Nations tournaments.
