Seven-time Super Bowl champion and former Michigan quarterback Tom Brady concur with Jim Harbaugh’s declaration that J.J. McCarthy is the greatest quarterback in Wolverines history, expressing his support on Instagram with a resounding “Go Blue” and “No doubt!!!”
Following McCarthy’s pivotal role in Michigan’s 27-20 overtime victory against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Rose Bowl, Harbaugh asserted that McCarthy is the best quarterback in the history of the Michigan program.
Although Brady spent four seasons at Michigan from 1996-99, his college performance didn’t match McCarthy’s excellence. McCarthy’s standout game in the Rose Bowl helped secure Michigan’s first-ever berth in the College Football Playoff national championship game.
While the first half of the game saw McCarthy and the Michigan offense struggling, they rallied in the second half, ultimately propelling the Wolverines to the championship game. McCarthy’s impressive stats for the game included completing 17 of 27 passes for 221 yards and three touchdowns, along with 25 rushing yards on three carries.
In his second year as a starter, McCarthy has amassed notable achievements, completing 73.2 percent of his passes for 2,851 yards and 22 touchdowns, with four interceptions in 14 games. He has also contributed 171 rushing yards and three scores.
Despite some skepticism surrounding Harbaugh’s declaration about McCarthy’s historical status, a potential national title win could silence the doubters. Michigan is set to face the Washington Huskies and Michael Penix Jr. in the national title game on January 8, following Washington’s victory over Texas in the Sugar Bowl.
