Baker Mayfield‘s emotions were laid bare on Sunday as a game-ending interception sealed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ fate in a 31-23 loss to the Detroit Lions during the Divisional Round.
Expressing his frustration after the game, Mayfield remarked, “It sucks. I feel like my heart just got ripped out.”
Despite the defense struggling in the second half, Mayfield did his utmost to keep the Bucs competitive, completing 26 of 41 passes for 349 yards and three touchdowns. However, two interceptions and four sacks proved pivotal for the NFC South champions.
Throughout the season, Mayfield faced adversity, delivering crucial throws, evading pass rushers, and providing the Bucs with a chance for an improbable comeback. Nevertheless, the significant errors will linger.
Mayfield’s impactful play this season was instrumental in the Bucs’ presence in Sunday’s game. Following the Tom Brady era, Tampa offered the former No. 1 overall pick a prove-it deal in the offseason, and Mayfield exceeded expectations.
Looking ahead, Mayfield expresses his desire to return to Tampa in 2024. He also hopes for the return of Pro Bowl receiver Mike Evans, a key free agent in the upcoming offseason.
As the offseason approaches, Bucs general manager Jason Licht faces substantial decisions, and head coach Todd Bowles acknowledges Mayfield’s earned right to return.
“Yeah, he most definitely has,” Bowles affirmed. “Obviously, it’s too early to talk about that, and business is business, but Baker had a helluva year. We love him, the guys love him, and then we’ll see what the future holds.”
Considering the projected franchise tag for QBs at nearly $36 million in 2024, Mayfield’s stellar season positions him well in a league where quality quarterbacks are consistently in demand, despite the Bucs falling short on Sunday.
