Wrong Statement Made In Shakur Stevenson’s Boring Title Win

Shakur Stevenson entered the fight against Edwin De Los Santos on Thursday with the intention of making a statement as his star continues to rise. Even though he recently emerged victorious in a third weight class, his reputation has taken a hit following one of the worst TV dramas in recent memory.

After defeating De Los Santos by scores of 116-112, 115-113, and 116-112 in a lightweight championship bout in which neither fighter scored ten or more points in any of the twelve rounds, Stevenson made no apologies.

“I had a bad performance tonight,” said Stevenson, ESPN’s No. 8 pound-for-pound boxer. “That’s all I’m really focused on. I wasn’t feeling too good, so I’ll live with it. It’s OK….

“I didn’t feel good before the fight,” he continued. “Honestly, I had already told myself that if I feel like this in the ring and if it’s not going well, I’m going to make sure that I box and get the victory.”

Throughout, Stevenson’s offensive production was minimal, particularly with his left hand. When asked if he had any injuries to his hand, Stevenson remained silent.

“I don’t got nothing to say about that,” he said. “I don’t make excuses. It happens. We go through a lot as fighters.”

Months of social media sparring between Devin Haney and Stevenson culminated in a post on X that said, “Stop that scared narrative… nobody was ever scared of that bum!”

According to Stevenson and others, he is arguably the boxer that people steer clear of the most.

Boxing star Ryan Garcia wrote on that same platform, “Imagine going to this fight for Formula 1 weekend, I would ask for my money back and go straight to bed, that’s how sleepy I’d be from being there.”

The lack of action is mostly due to the clash of styles. Being counterpunchers who lean southpaw, neither boxer desired to take the lead.

Even though Stevenson prevailed and won his third division title—which he had previously lost to Haney when he agreed to fight Regis Prograis on December 9—he will now need to recover from a night in which supporters cheered him on and made their way out of the arena before the bout even got underway.

But in terms of entertainment value, this Thursday night wasn’t all that bad.

The most consistent action fighter in boxing, Emanuel Navarrete, put on another impressive display, but was unexpectedly stopped to a draw in his 130-pound title defense against Robson Conceicao.

After taking out Conceicao twice, in Rounds 4 and 7, and nearly stopping him in Round 11, Navarrete won the final round on all three scorecards to avoid losing and probably secure a rematch.

Stevenson needs to fight a pressure fighter who lets go of his hands so he can counter in an entertaining fight in order to erase the bad taste from his previous fight. Navarrete more than meets the criteria and has been connected to a possible April match for Stevenson; however, his draw alters the situation because a rematch might be the next step.

Golden Boy-sponsored William Zepeda is perhaps Stevenson’s best option right now. The unbeaten Mexican fighter frequently lands more than 1,000 blows in a single bout. At one point, he exceeded 1,500. Stevenson could put on a show in a TV-friendly fight against a loud puncher like Zepeda that makes the fans forget about this night forever.
