On Black Friday, which is one of the busiest days for online shopping all year, thousands of HSBC customers complained that they couldn’t access the bank’s online and mobile banking services.

Over 4,000 users reported on Friday that they were unable to access their accounts through the HSBC app, according to Downdetector, a website that monitors and aggregates user complaints about website breaks.

The bank said on X at 11 p.m. on Friday that “all of our customers’ online and mobile banking services are getting back up and running.”

It added: “Once again we’re really sorry, and understand this was deeply frustrating for many of our customers. We’ll continue to work behind the scenes to ensure a full recovery.”

The bank had earlier stated that the outage was “the result of an internal system issue” and that both online card purchases and services through its apps had been impacted.

With 24 November being the last Friday of the month, it will also be payday for some customers. One X user posted in response to HSBC UK’s message: “Literally the worst timing ever. People got paid and have bills to pay.”

Another wrote: “Got to move some money so I can buy some Black Friday purchases (that I don’t need). Maybe it’s a sign!”

On Friday morning, users of the HSBC mobile app saw a notice stating that the bank was “performing a system upgrade to bring you a better banking experience.”

Customers of First Direct or M&S Bank were unaffected by the outage.

About 15 million people bank with HSBC in the UK; the bank had previously declared that it would close 114 physical branches nationwide this year.

The high street bank will have 327 branches across the country by the end of this year, down from 590 in 2021. The bank claimed that part of the reason for the closures was because customers were switching to online banking.
