Taylor Swift Postpones concert After Fan Dies At Show Amid Extreme Temperatures

Taylor Swift decided to postpone her Saturday night concert in Rio de Janeiro due to the high temperatures and the day after a fan passed away at her first “Eras Tour” performance in the city.

Swift had two more shows in Rio de Janeiro planned for this Saturday and Sunday. Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes announced on X that the concert scheduled for Saturday has been moved to Monday.

“The safety and well-being of my fans, fellow performers, and crew has to and always will come first,” Swift wrote on Instagram Saturday.

According to a statement from the show’s Brazilian organizers, a 23-year-old fan passed away at Swift’s “Eras Tour” concert in Rio on Friday night.

Swift expressed her shock at the death in an early Saturday ET Instagram post.

“I can’t believe I’m writing these words but it is with a shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show,” Swift wrote. “There’s very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young.”

Ana Clara Benevides Machado was identified as a fan by Time4Fun, the concert organizer.

“Last night, Ana Clara felt unwell and was promptly attended to by the team of firefighters and paramedics, being taken to the medical center at the Nilton Santos Stadium for first aid protocol,” the organizer said in a statement posted to Instagram. “Given the situation, the medical team chose to transfer her to Salgado Filho Hospital, where, after almost an hour of emergency care, she unfortunately died. To the family and friends of Ana Clara Benevides Machado, our sincere condolences.”

The cause of death is still unknown.

“I’m not going to be able to speak about this from stage because I feel overwhelmed by grief when I even try to talk about it,” Swift wrote in the Saturday Instagram post. “I want to say now I feel this loss deeply and my broken heart goes out to her family and friends.”

Paes, the mayor, said on the social media site X that the “loss of a young woman’s life … is unacceptable.”

“Obviously, we are still finding out more details about the circumstances of what happened,” Paes said. “In any case, I have already ordered the municipality’s Executive Chief of Operations to demand action with the production of the show.”

The municipality will demand on Saturday that the show’s production company provide additional brigades and ambulances, new water distribution points, and one hour’s advance admission to the show, according to Paes, who wrote that authorities are still investigating the specific circumstances surrounding the death.

Social media footage from Swift’s performance showed her stating that people needed water and even throwing a bottle of water to a person in the audience at one point.

Rio was among the many areas of the country under a red heat alert, according to Brazil’s meteorological service. The Weather Channel predicted a high temperature of 96 degrees Fahrenheit and 64% humidity for Saturday.

It’s unclear if Swift’s scheduled performance in Rio on Sunday will be postponed due to inclement weather. Following her performance in Rio, Swift will play three shows in São Paulo starting on November 24.
