Tatton MP Esther McVey Returns To Government As Minister

Tatton Member of Parliament Esther McVey has unexpectedly returned to government after being named a minister in Rishi Sunak‘s reorganized Cabinet this evening. No. 10 announced McVey’s appointment as Minister without Portfolio on the social media platform X, which was formerly Twitter.

She has, however, unofficially taken on the title of “minister for common sense,” as it is believed that she has been assigned the responsibility of “combatting wokery” and “standing up for working people,” in an attempt to make peace with the far right.

The Cheshire MP, who wed fellow Tory MP Philip Davies in 2020, will now be able to attend Cabinet sessions thanks to her appointment. In order to assume her new ministerial position, she plans to leave her position as a part-time presenter on GB News.

She is the most recent in a line of unexpected appointments, which also includes McVey’s former Minister for Employment, Lord David Cameron.

In addition, McVey served as Boris Johnson’s Minister of Housing and Theresa May’s Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. In 2019, she participated in a Blue Collar Conservatives campaign and announced her resignation as prime minister. However, she was not able to pass the first round of voting by Tory MPs.

She returns to Government for the first time since being let go in Johnson’s post-Brexit reshuffles in February 2020.

It was just after 5 p.m. this evening that the Tatton MP was spotted entering No. 10. Since January 2018, the role of Minister without Portfolio has been held by nine different party chairs, who are typically the ones to fill it.

North West Durham MP Richard Holden was named the new chairman of the Conservative Party today.
