A tribute service in Georgia honored humanitarian and former first lady Rosalynn Carter on Tuesday, with her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, and various dignitaries, including President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and all living former first ladies, in attendance.
Rosalynn Carter passed away on Nov. 19 at the age of 96, with her husband by her side. Their son, James “Chip” Carter III, offered a touching tribute, expressing gratitude for his mother’s influence in mending shirts, supporting him on the campaign trail, and aiding in his journey to recovery from addiction.
Vice-chair of the Carter Center, Kathryn Cade, highlighted Rosalynn Carter’s impactful contributions, emphasizing her commitment to alleviating suffering, supporting caregivers, advocating for equal rights, and destigmatizing mental illness.
Jimmy Carter, facing health challenges, attended the service in a wheelchair, accompanied by various family members. The service included readings by descendants, music by artists loved by Rosalynn Carter, and attendance by prominent figures such as the Bidens, Hillary Clinton, and Michelle Obama.
On Wednesday, a funeral procession to Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia, will be followed by a private interment at the Carter family residence. Rosalynn Carter lay in repose at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum, and a wreath-laying ceremony honored her at the Rosalynn Carter Health and Human Sciences Complex.
