Arsenal is furious about poor officiating after VAR seemingly contributed to their league match loss against Newcastle on Sunday.
Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta has been particularly unhappy about the turn of events which led to their loss of three points.
Anthony Gordon scored the winner for Newcastle United in the 64th minute against Arsenal to secure all three points for his side.
VAR checked the goal for four minutes and six seconds on four potential infringements before it was allowed.
The first infringement was to check whether the ball crossed the touchline before Joe Willock rescued it near the corner flag.
The second was to check whether Joelinton pushed compatriot Gabriel inside the box while attempting to head the ball from a cross.
The third was to check if Gordon was in an offside position before pushing the ball into the net. VAR also checked a possible handball before ultimately allowing the goal to stand.
The decision was the difference between the two sides, as Mikel Arteta’s side suffered their first defeat of the season.
Mikel Arteta has been very vocal about the “alleged mistake of VAR” as he maintains that the goal should not have been allowed to stand.
Former Premier League referee, Dermot Gallagher has spoken on the incident.
“The whole of the ball has to be over the whole of the line. You can look at it from that angle, and it is impossible to tell,” he said.
“We see it with corners where it looks over the circumference, but the ball overhangs, so they are allowed to play. I think that might be the problem with this, that they can’t be sure that some of that ball isn’t overhanging the line,” he concluded.
