Ollie Watkins’ Late Goal Helps Aston Villa To Defeat AZ Alkmaar

Ollie Watkins’ late winner helped Aston Villa overcome AZ Alkmaar at Villa Park, guaranteeing the team’s passage to the Europa Conference League knockout stages.

In the 81st minute, Watkins raced onto a chipped pass from Douglas Luiz to put Villa ahead.

Early in the second half, Vangelis Pavlidis of AZ Alkmaar scored the first goal for the team by latching onto a ball over the top and dinking a finish past Emiliano Martinez of Villa.

Nine minutes later, Diego Carlos equalized for Villa, reaching up to meet Leon Bailey’s corner and nodding in his first goal with the team.

As a result of the outcome, Villa only needs one more point from their remaining two games to advance to the Conference League playoffs.

They are still in second place in the group, six points ahead of Zrinjski Mostar, who have a better goal differential than AZ.

“The reaction after we conceded was fantastic,” said Aston Villa manager Unai Emery.”We have to be strong and take experiences like tonight to know how to win in Europe against really good teams.”
