No. 5 Florida State Defeats Rival Florida 24-15 For 18th Consecutive Win

Florida State receiver Keon Coleman did a backflip at midfield as the last seconds passed. As with the Seminoles, it was flawless.

With less than three minutes remaining, Trey Benson scored three touchdowns on the ground, including a 26-yard touchdown on third down, and No. 5 Florida State defeated rival Florida 24–15 on Saturday night to increase their winning streak to eighteen.

In addition to breaking the rock in the locker room after the game, Benson finished with 95 yards on 19 carries to help the Seminoles (12-0) move a victory away from a possible College Football Playoff spot.

“It was an impressive rally for our team,” said coach Mike Norvell, whose team outscored Florida 24-3 after falling behind early.

For Florida (5-7), which has now dropped five straight games and will not go to a bowl game for the first time since 2017, it was an unsatisfactory conclusion. The team led by Coach Billy Napier saw two players sent off, made more mistakes on special teams, and lost for the fourth straight week in the fourth quarter.

“We’ve got to learn to finish games,” Napier said.

After falling behind 12-0 in the first quarter, the ‘Noles dominated the second half, limiting Florida to 48 yards in the last half hour and minus-15 yards in the fourth. Finishing with six sacks, FSU had two and a half from star Jared Verse.

When it mattered most, Rodemaker delivered a huge block for star quarterback Jordan Travis, who was observing from the visiting athletic director’s suite while wearing a walking boot on his left leg. In the fourth, on a fourth-and-3 play from the Florida 34, he completed a dart to Ja’Khi Douglas. It made room for a quick field goal that gave the Seminoles a decisive lead.

On the next possession, Rodemaker was knocked out for a few snaps but came back in time to pass the ball to Benson for the game-winning score. When Kalen DeLoach intercepted Max Brown’s pass on the following drive, any hopes of a late-game miracle were dashed.

Rodemaker failed miserably to erase memories of Travis, a Heisman Trophy contender whose season came to an end last week due to a horrific injury sustained against North Alabama. However, he was sufficient to help Florida State defeat its rival in-state for the seventh time in the previous ten meetings.

Rodemaker finished with 134 yards on 12 of 25 passes.

Less productively, Brown completed 9 of 16 passes for 86 yards in lieu of starter Graham Mertz, who was hurt (broken collarbone). Leading the Gators in rushing yards with 107 was Montrell Johnson.
