New Orleans Saints Lose Derek Carr, Michael Thomas, Marcus Lattimore To Injuries

Three starting players for the New Orleans Saints had to exit due to injuries during Sunday’s 27-19 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

The following Saints players left early: cornerback Marshon Lattimore (ankle), wide receiver Michael Thomas (knee), and quarterback Derek Carr (right shoulder/concussion). Carr and Lattimore left on a cart.

Late in the third quarter, Carr was forced to leave the game due to consecutive high and low hits by Vikings defensive lineman. As Carr finished his pass, he seemed to take a helmet to his throwing shoulder and head, hitting his head on the turf as he fell to the ground.

While the Saints’ team physicians arrived to tend to him, Carr remained on the ground and other teammates took a knee. After a while, he strolled towards the medical tent, but moments later, he was sitting in the front seat of a cart. After being driven to the locker room, he never came back.

Carr is in protocol and was declared ineligible to play because of the injury, according to Saints coach Dennis Allen.

Carr has exited a game early due to injury twice already this season. During a Week 3 loss to the Green Bay Packers, he damaged the AC joint in his right shoulder. He was sent to the hospital for further assessment, he took the field against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next week.

Jameis Winston, the backup quarterback, took over for Carr in both games. Winston completed 13 of 25 passes for 122 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. In the fourth quarter, officials overturned Winston’s second interception because they determined the pass was incomplete after reviewing it.

According to Allen, assuming Carr stays healthy, the Saints—who have next week off—have no intention of switching quarterbacks. Before the injury, Carr completed 13 of 18 throws for 110 yards, with no touchdowns and no interceptions.

With a knee injury early in the first quarter, Thomas had to leave the game. On the Saints’ opening two plays of the game, Thomas was singled out and took a strong hit while trying to grab a ball. Thomas only appeared in one series before making his way to the medical tent and spending a long time there before returning to the sidelines. Without donning a helmet, Thomas sat on the sideline and seemed to attempt to extend his knee, but he was declared out of the game at the end of the first half.

Two days after his arrest in Kenner, Louisiana, on suspicion of simple violence and criminal mischief, Thomas, 30, on the field for Sunday’s game. Following a confrontation with a construction worker close to Thomas’ home, who claimed he had thrown a brick at his windshield, the man was taken into custody. Before the team’s next day flight to Minnesota, Thomas was booked without any problems, according to Kenner Police, and released a few hours later.

Thomas has not missed a game this season after playing in just 10 regular-season games from 2020 to 2022 because of ailments.

In the fourth quarter, Lattimore was also lost by the Saints. With his right leg supported up, Lattimore climbed onto the front seat of the cart and was taken to the locker room.

Wide receiver Rashid Shaheed, defensive lineman Malcolm Roach, and cornerback Alontae Taylor all seemed to sustain injuries during the contest, though Shaheed continued to play until the very end.
