Mississippi State Football Loses To Ole Miss Rebels In 2023 Egg Bowl

Greg Knox, the interim head coach, undoubtedly had the Bulldogs prepared to compete in the 2023 Egg Bowl. He should be commended greatly for getting the Bulldogs ready to face the much stronger Ole Miss Rebels squad.

But in the end, Ole Miss prevailed in the fierce rivalry matchup known as the Battle for the Golden Egg.

After an exciting game against Ole Miss the previous year, Mississippi State was hoping to keep the Golden Egg trophy in Starkville, but that didn’t work out. Lane Kiffin’s Rebels defeated the Bulldogs 17–7, allowing them to escape Starkville.

Early in the game, Ole Miss was able to establish a strong tone and consistently stymie a Mississippi State offense that was having trouble. It wasn’t just the Bulldogs, though, who couldn’t maintain drives in the beginning. Matt Brock, the defensive coordinator for MSU, was able to consistently force Kiffin’s offense to punt early on.

Quinshon Judkins was able to get going for the Rebels once the Ole Miss offense steadied itself. Eventually, a 36-yard field goal midway through the second quarter gave Ole Miss a 3-0 advantage over MSU.

As MSU offensive coordinator Kevin Barbay and QB Will Rogers got the offense into a rhythm in the second quarter, the Bulldogs were able to find some life after State attempted to counter and ultimately missed a field goal of their own.

And it paid off in the third quarter.

MSU had a 7-3 lead thanks to a touchdown drive led by Will Rogers, who also scored using his feet. That lead was short-lived. Ole Miss answered with a drive for a touchdown of their own, putting them ahead 10–7.

Even though the drive featured a contentious targeting call and an injury involving Jason Dart diving, Ole Miss managed to turn the tide of the game and prevail.

Because Jaxson Dart hit Caden Prieskorn for a 26-yard touchdown, extending the Rebel lead to 17-7, just as it appeared that MSU might have found a way to tie the score. And that was sufficient to make the game unattainable.

There was no way for MSU to rally. The Bulldogs had trouble scoring on a regular basis. Two field goals were missed by them. They just didn’t seem like a very good team. And now they had a crushing defeat at the hands of an Ole Miss team that, despite their inconsistencies, was obviously superior. However, we can now focus entirely on the MSU football team’s future and the coaching search.
