Megan Thee Stallion Drops New Single ‘Cobra’ Under Her Own Label

Megan Thee Stallion is back is back with new music. The hip-hop artist, who had a contentious legal struggle with her former label, released “Cobra,” her debut single under her own label, Hot Girl Productions, on Friday, Nov. 3.

Friday saw the premiere of the music video for “Cobra,” which features the artist emerging from the jaws of a poisonous cobra. She even loses skin like a snake while standing in front of bystanders in a glass enclosure at one point (see the entire video below).

According to Variety, Megan and her previous label, 1501 Certified Entertainment, resolved their contract dispute and “amicably” parted ways last month. The 28-year-old rapper announced on Instagram Live just one week prior to the settlement that she was going to bankroll her music career going forward.

“This part of my album is very much so funded by Megan Thee Stallion because we’re trying to get off … Y’all know what’s the tea. But I have no label right now,” she explained to her fans, according to Billboard. “We’re doing everything funded straight out of Megan Thee Stallion’s pockets … We are in my pockets, hotties, so let’s do our big one.”

The singer’s mental health and her battles to survive a slew of setbacks in her life are addressed in the song’s lyrics. The opening line of the song features her rapping, “Breakin’ down and I had the whole world watchin’ / But the worst part is really who watched me / Every night I cried, I almost died / And nobody close tried to stop me.”

Megan suffered a gunshot wound to her foot in July 2020 at the hands of rapper Tory Lanez. After being found guilty, Lanez received a 10-year prison sentence. In an editorial for Elle published in August 2023, she discussed the anguish that the shooting and its aftermath caused her.

Four years ago, Megan was included in Forbes’ yearly list of 30 Under 30, and in November 2022, she was featured on the daily cover. A potential global tour, her third studio album, and a NetflixNFLX +1.8% contract for Meghan to develop and produce a slate of series, including a comedy based on her upbringing, were hinted at in the interview. In addition, Time Inc. is giving the rapper $3 million to make a life documentary.
