Kai Havertz Goal Sends Arsenal To The Top Of The Premier League After 1-0 Victory Against Brentford

Arsenal defeated Brentford 1-0 on Saturday, propelling them to the top of the Premier League thanks to a goal by Kai Havertz in the 89th minute.

Given that Manchester City and Liverpool drew 1-1 earlier in the day, Mikel Arteta’s team appeared destined to lose the chance to take the lead.

Havertz, however, scored his first goal for Arsenal from open play after switching from Chelsea in the offseason with a decisive header.

“When you have an opportunity to take a bite out of everybody you have to do it,” said Arteta, who was taking charge of his 200th game as Arsenal manager.

Havertz’s lone other goal for Arsenal came in September when they faced Bournemouth from the penalty spot. His goal on Saturday at Gtech Community Stadium proved to be pivotal as the Gunners edged ahead of the reigning champion City by one point.

As Bukayo Saka crossed the ball at the far post, Havertz headed it between Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken’s legs.

“These late winners are nice, and then to celebrate in front of the fans it was a good feeling for sure,” Havertz said. “The cross was amazing and I thought maybe why not do this run and the ball was perfect and I scored.”

When Leandro Trossard thought he had opened the score earlier, the Arsenal players were celebrating, but a VAR review determined the goal was offside.

Last season, Arsenal was first in the standings for 248 days before losing the lead to City, who won their third consecutive championship.

This time, Arteta hopes to do even better.

“I love winning and we are top of the table and this is where we have to want to be,” he said.
