Joel Embiid Helps Philadelphia 76ers Defeat Pistons For 7th Straight Win


The Philadelphia 76ers, who are on a roll, defeated the struggling Pistons 114-106 in Detroit on Friday night to win their first game in the NBA’s mid-season tournament. Joel Embiid led the team with 33 points and 16 rebounds.

Embiid made 8 of 21 field goals and 16 of 19 foul shots. Philadelphia, which has won seven straight games, got 29 points, 11 assists, six rebounds, and four steals from Tyrese Maxey.

De’Anthony Melton scored ten points and grabbed five rebounds, while Tobias Harris scored twenty-four points.

Detroit has dropped seven straight games. Killian Hayes led the team with 23 points, five rebounds, and six assists. A total of 21 points, 7 assists, and 4 rebounds came from Cade Cunningham. Along with 10 points apiece from Isaiah Stewart and Stanley Umude, Ausar Thompson finished with 12 points, 13 rebounds, and four assists.

Due to an ankle injury, Pistons center Jalen Duren left the game in the third quarter.

At the break, Detroit had a 56-48 lead. With 14 points and six assists from Hayes, the Pistons may lead by as much as 16. Cunningham finished with 12 points but three fouls. Maxey and Embiid combined for 27 points to keep the Sixers in the hunt.

Philadelphia tied the game early in the second half with a 12-4 run. Embiid made a mid-range jump shot to open the scoring and a 3-pointer to close it out.

Embiid converted two free throws to give Philadelphia a one-point lead at 72-71. The Sixers led 83-77 at the end of the quarter after an 11-4 surge. Once more, Embiid sealed the deal with a layup.

Melton made a 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter, and Maxey added a layup to put the score 88-77. Maxey’s feed was converted by Harris for a 15-point advantage.

Even though Detroit scored the following four points, it took until the very end to cut the margin to less than ten points. Cunningham made a three-pointer to cut Detroit’s lead to 10 points at 98-88, but Philadelphia responded with five consecutive points, including a three-pointer from Maxey.

With 4:05 remaining, Harris made two free throws to give the Sixers a 107-90 lead. A putback by Embiid made it 112-95.
