Host Jason Momoa expressed his desire to create a big impression by gushing about how much he loved the ocean during his opening monologue on “Saturday Night Live.”
During his opening remarks, the 44-year-old actor made a playful reference to his mother, saying that she was “still recovering from giving birth to me.”
“I’m so happy to be here. I love this place. I love life. I love waking up, washing my luxurious hair with a full body of shampoo,” he said as he shook his ponytail. “And I love playing ‘Aquaman’ because I love the ocean.”
Momoa continued talking about how much he loved the water and how, as a child, he had wanted to be a marine biologist. “Which makes sense because I’m built like a scientist,” he said.
The actor, who was born in Hawaii and grew up in Iowa, claimed that his love of marine life was hindered by his Midwest upbringing. He made the decision to return to Hawaii after viewing the 1998 surf film “In God’s Hands,” which is based there.
Momoa took pride in his role as the star of “Baywatch Hawaii,” which launched his career. He said, “I fell in love with acting—I call it the B-word.”
In closing his speech, Momoa talked about Mananalu, his aluminum water bottle company that seeks “to eliminate single-use plastic water bottles” and reduce ocean pollution.
The “Aquaman” actor made light of the fact that Mananalu means “Suck it, Dasani” in Hawaiian.
Momoa hosted the NBC sketch comedy for the second time this past Saturday. In December 2018, he took the reins for the first time.
Momoa mentioned his stay “on the island” in a sketch called “Cast Away,” where he visited his ex-fiance Elaine (Chloe Fineman) and her husband Dennis (Andrew Dismukes) after returning from a life at sea.
“The island changed me,” Momoa’s character Laird said as he discussed being on a deserted island for five years after his plane crashed. “The only thing that mattered was survival, the size of the fire I could build with my own hands (and) the primitive skills I could summon to hunt.”
Dennis attempted to put Momoa’s Laird to the test with a push-up competition, but Laird leaned into his physique for the skit and swept Elaine off her feet.
