Jared Goff, Lions Spark Wild Late Comeback To Defeat Bears In Justin Fields’ Return

Jared Goff, despite a terrible start to the day, rallied the Detroit Lions on Sunday afternoon and led the team to a position it hasn’t had in over 60 years.

Goff led the Lions from a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter to steal a 31-26 victory over the Chicago Bears at Ford Field, despite throwing three interceptions. With the victory, the Lions won three in a row and improved to 8-2 overall, one of the best NFC records, giving Detroit a commanding lead in the NFC North. The Lions are 8-2 for the first time in a season since 1962.

Late in the fourth quarter, the Bears, who had intercepted Goff twice on his first two drives of the game, took a 26-14 lead. Goff didn’t turn it on until there were less than four minutes remaining in the game.

Less than three minutes remained in the fourth quarter as Goff reduced the game to a single possession by hitting Jameson Williams for a 32-yard touchdown to cap off a 76-second drive.

On their subsequent drive, the Lions shut down the Bears and Justin Fields, who was making his first appearance since missing four straight games due to a hand injury. In less than 30 seconds, they forced a three-and-out and recovered possession of the ball.

Upon returning to work, Goff orchestrated an 11-play drive culminating in a 1-yard touchdown run by David Montgomery. The Lions then led by three points after the two-point conversion.

The Bears had completely collapsed by this point, so the Lions decided to force a safety to complete the five-point victory comeback.

Fields returned for the Bears, going 16-of-23 for 169 yards and a touchdown. With 18 carries for 104 yards on the ground, he was also their top rusher. Only Lamar Jackson and Michael Vick have more 100-yard rushing games in their careers than him at quarterback. He currently has five such games. On seven catches, D.J. Moore totaled 96 receiving yards.

For the Lions, Goff completed 23 of 35 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns in addition to his three interceptions. Amon-Ra St. Brown had eight catches for 77 yards and a touchdown, while Montgomery had twelve carries for 76 yards and a touchdown.

With seven victories in a row, the Lions are headed for their first divisional crown in thirty years. On Thanksgiving, they will host the Green Bay Packers.
